Benefits of using music with young children
Music is a wonderful tool to use with children as they are inherently musical and generally respond positively to musical stimuli. Music is also a great motivator, encouraging involvement and participation in stimulating activities.
Musical awareness begins very early in children. The unborn child learns to recognise the sound of its parents’ voices, the pulse of life within the mother’s body such as her heartbeat as well as music played in the home.
Hearing is usually fully developed at birth and an infant’s ability to discriminate musical elements is also highly developed at this young age.
The tradition of singing lullabies to communicate with and soothe babies and using music in play has been used for millennia.
Music is very useful for new parents to calm and soothe baby through singing and / or listening to gentle music, to help bonding through humming or singing and to stimulate baby as they grow.
